What is AEO? Answer engine optimization explained

By the Xaeo team · Published

Answer engine optimization (AEO) is the practice of making a page answer a specific question clearly, so that search features, voice assistants and AI assistants can use it as a direct answer. It builds on SEO rather than replacing it: the page still has to be crawlable, indexable and trustworthy.

Key points

  • AEO is a working label, not a technical standard.
  • The core move is a question-led heading with a short, direct answer beneath it.
  • No markup or tactic guarantees a featured snippet or an AI answer.
  • Check the work by sampling real questions over time and recording what was observed.

In more detail

Answer engine optimization is a label for an old editorial habit. Put the question in a heading. Answer it plainly in the first lines. Then give the detail a careful reader would want next. Search features, voice assistants and AI assistants can all reuse a page written this way, but none of them has to. Google says its systems choose featured snippets automatically, and that you cannot mark a page up to get one. So AEO is not a switch. It is a way of writing, and it still depends on SEO basics: the page must be crawlable, indexable and honest. To check the work, ask the real buyer questions on the engines your buyers use, record what comes back, and repeat later. Treat each result as a sample, because answers change between requests, engines and interfaces.

Key terms

AEO (answer engine optimization)
Making a page answer a specific question clearly enough that search features, voice assistants and AI assistants can use it as a direct answer.
Featured snippet
A highlighted answer excerpt that Google’s systems choose automatically for some searches.
Direct answer
A short, self-contained reply placed under a question heading, so it still makes sense when quoted on its own.

What does AEO involve in practice?

AEO is mostly editorial discipline. A reader, or a system quoting the page, should find the question, a short answer and the supporting detail in that order. The checklist below turns that into work you can review page by page, and none of it needs special tooling.

  • Use a heading phrased as the question a buyer would actually ask.
  • Put a short, self-contained answer directly under the heading.
  • Add the conditions, steps or evidence below it, with a table when you compare options.
  • State facts that can be checked, such as what you do, where and for whom.
  • Show who wrote the page and when it was last updated.
  • Mark up with structured data only what is visible on the page.

How is AEO different from SEO and GEO?

SEO is about being found in search results, AEO is about answering the question once someone has asked it, and GEO is about appearing in answers that AI systems write. They overlap heavily, and the same page can serve all three. The table compares the usual emphasis of each label.

Label Usual emphasis What you would look at
SEO Crawlable, relevant pages that rank in search. Indexing, impressions, clicks and conversions.
AEO A clear, direct answer to one specific question. Whether the page is used as an answer, and whether visitors finish their task.
GEO Mentions and citations inside AI-generated answers. Dated answers, the exact question and the engine that gave them.

No. Google says its systems decide automatically whether a page makes a good featured snippet, and that you cannot mark a page up to get one. For AI Overviews and AI Mode it lists no extra requirements beyond being indexed and eligible to appear with a snippet, which is not a promise of inclusion.

Read Google’s own wording in its featured snippets documentation and its AI features documentation.

How do you check whether AEO work is helping?

Sample the questions you wrote the page for, on the engines your buyers use, and write down what each one answered and when. Repeat on a fixed schedule so the observations can be compared. Treat the result as a sample, because answers change between requests, engines and interfaces.

  1. Fix the question list. Write down the exact buyer questions each page is meant to answer, and keep the wording stable.
  2. Record each answer. Note the engine, the interface, the date, the exact question and the full answer, including any cited links.
  3. Label what you saw. Mark each result as a mention, a citation, a recommendation or not mentioned, using the same definitions every time.
  4. Confirm the page can be used. Check that the page is indexed, returns real HTML and can show a snippet, using the search engine’s own inspection tools.
  5. Repeat and compare. Run the same questions on a schedule and compare like with like. Watch search traffic and useful actions separately from the sampled answers.

The methodology explains what a defensible record contains and why a rescan cannot prove cause.
